A life without a goal is like a boat without a rudder
While the metaphor above sounds pretty clichéd, very few of us know what our life’s goals are. Even fewer act on them. Yet, these goals make our lives matter, and are something we should work on.
Here is a simple 3 step technique to know our goals, and get to them.
Write Goals Down
Extremely important, penning your goals down sounds simple, but is usually the step where most falter. While many people have goals in mind, very few put them down on paper. We wait for the right time, the right notepad and anything else right. The right time is now. If I could, I would actually have you leave this article and write down your goals. SERIOUSLY.
Write them down on a notepad with a pen or a pencil. Not on your tablet, mobile phone or your computer. Pick up a paper and pen and write it down.
Write down at least fifty goals. The first part is to just keep writing whatever comes to your mind. Once you are stuck, try to answer the questions below to figure out your goals.
> If time and money were not a constraint, what would you rather be doing?
> How can this world be a better place because of you?
> How do you want people to remember you?
Ask yourself these questions and then write even more. This should take you to at least forty. With this done and in case you still have not reached fifty, think of the different roles you play in your life as a parent, child, sibling, friend, spouse, individual - see if you can think of any as yet unwritten goals related to this.
As you write your goals, keep them specific, measurable, time bound and always in the present tense.
See your Goals everyday
Keep your goals close to you. In your wallet, on top of your work desk, and in your cup board. Ensure they are the last thing you see when you go to bed and the first thing you see as you wake up.
Create a vision board (a collection of pictures of your goal) for yourself. This makes the effect powerful and imprints the goal deep within you. Place the vision board at a place where you see it often.
Remember your goal sheet is a living document. Keep updating, editing, improving, building up or toning down a goal as you gain more clarity or move along the journey.
When you achieve a goal, remember to tick it off from your goal sheet and vision board, and give yourself a little treat!
Act on your Goals
Acting on your goals is the single most important step. If we do not make it happen, no one else will (including God, our friends, family, the government). I usually find that trying to act on too many things is not helpful. We tend to get lost in the complexity of the task without coming close to our goal. This is where micro steps helps. These are extremely tiny steps that you can take on a daily basis.
Once we have split a goal into micro steps, our job is to know the immediate next step to take and then take that. Then we move to the next step, and the next. Before we know it, the task is completed.
Some techniques you may use to implement micro steps are tiny habits, living the day, NLP. Google them to find out more, and pick a technique that suits you. Alternately, ask your coach to recommend one to you and use that.
